Florian Freihöfer's Vary: A Luminary Symbol of Transformation

Handcrafted Light Object Merges Traditional Craftsmanship and Modern Minimalism

Florian Freihöfer's award-winning design, Vary, is a unique light object that symbolizes transformation and change. Handcrafted by a glassblower, this minimalist luminary is a testament to the power of design in shaping our perception of space and existence.

Spaces we inhabit are shaped by various influences. In architecture, design is defined by location, surrounds, structural analysis, and regulations. However, when it comes to design, objects often stand alone, not in direct conversation with their surroundings. This raises questions about the space which emerges unintentionally or unconsciously, and whether it communicates or interacts with its environment. Florian Freihöfer's Vary is a design that seeks to explore these interspaces and their potential for interaction.

What sets Vary apart is its use of geometric shapes to symbolize transformation. The metamorphosis from angular to round is a visual representation of change, a concept often feared due to high expectations and specific goals. By creating a light object that changes its form in spatial orbit, Freihöfer invites the observer to interact with the design, creating a connection between the object and existence, and ensuring change remains a visible part of our life.

The production of Vary combines traditional craftsmanship with modern minimalism. The luminaire is handcrafted by a glassblower, using a single line to form two 3-dimensional objects. It's powered by a high voltage neon source, similar to those used in advertisement lights, with a color temperature of 4000 kelvin. The connection between the cables and the glass tube is a satin standard aluminum tube, with the high voltage power supply integrated into the floor unit.

Despite its minimalist appearance, Vary is a complex design that challenges our perception of space and interaction. As the observer moves around the luminary, its appearance changes, creating an illusion of multiple luminaires. This design interaction is a testament to Freihöfer's innovative approach to design and his dedication to exploring the space between.

The design of Vary was a process that started in April 2014 and was completed in August 2014 in Hildesheim. During this time, Freihöfer dedicated his research to the concept of interspace, examining the interaction between objects and the unintentional spaces that emerge. His observation led him to the conclusion that there are no unintentional spaces, but rather, our perception of space is formed by our experiences and point of view.

Vary is a design that has not only challenged the conventional understanding of space and interaction, but also earned recognition for its innovative approach. In 2015, it was awarded the Golden A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award, a prestigious accolade granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. This award is a testament to Freihöfer's innovative approach to design and his commitment to exploring the potential of interspaces.
